Have them broken in well before our trip. Have good socks, too.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Water<\/strong>. Figure on drinking at least 2 liters a day.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shelter<\/strong>. Sleeping bag; pad; tent | Hammock; tarp; quilts<\/li>\n<li><strong>Food<\/strong>. For an overnight: Lunches (2), dinner, breakfast, snacks.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rain gear<\/strong>. You never know when a sprinkle will show up.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sanitary supplies<\/strong>. Toilet paper. Hand Sanitizer. Ziploc bags. Trowel.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Whistle<\/strong>. Universal signal you\u2019re in trouble: 3 blasts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hiking poles<\/strong>. Good for balance. Good for getting up \u2013 and down \u2013 the hills.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Headlamp<\/strong>. Yeah, your phone probably has a light. But it&#8217;ll eat up the battery and you have to hold it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>If you\u2019re going to cook:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Backpacker stove and fuel; waterproof matches\/lighter.<\/li>\n<li>Pot\/pan with lid; cup\/mug; spoon\/spork.<\/li>\n<li>Options: Freezer Bag Cooking (FBC); commercial food packets<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Clothing<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Layer, layer, layer!<\/em> It can get warm as we\u2019re hiking. But you\u2019ll cool off when we stop. And it can be chilly at night.<\/li>\n<li>No cotton! When you sweat in it, it takes too long to dry. Wear wool, silk, nylon and\/or poly instead.<\/li>\n<li>You only need two sets of clothes: the ones you&#8217;ll hike in and the ones you&#8217;ll sleep in.<\/li>\n<li>Good things to have: hat; gloves; buff.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Useful<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Map\/compass (learn how to use them)<\/li>\n<li>Extra Ziploc\/trash bags<\/li>\n<li>Sunscreen; lip balm; bug spray<\/li>\n<li>Duct tape. Wrap it around your hiking poles.<\/li>\n<li>First Aid kit. At the very least, some bandages, blister stuff, your preferred pain medication.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Things to know<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t assume you\u2019ll have a phone signal. Especially if you use AT&amp;T.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t travel far when you go pee at night. It\u2019s very dark and it\u2019s easy to get lost. You can have total privacy in just a few steps.<\/li>\n<li>The emergency signal is 3 blasts on a whistle.<\/li>\n<li>Campfires can be nice, but it\u2019s important to ensure they\u2019re set up safely (only in a fire ring) and fully put out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Things you must have Good hiking shoes.
